Snow!
Thursday, February 25th, 2010Day 41 – Baby Jail Not So Bad
Thursday, February 25th, 2010They complained about the baby jail at first, but now they are a-ok. Kate visited again last night and they got to meet some Cardigan Corgis. Clicker training is continuing, they are all sitting now (although they don’t know the word yet), and they are starting to learn “down”. I am also working on mouth handling to check teeth and that sort of thing – they say it’s not so bad if there is a bit of cheese to eat along with it! I will try to get better pictures this weekend. They turn SIX WEEKS OLD tomorrow! Where has the time gone? They are all using the litterbox pretty reliably for poop at least, which makes cleaning up much easier than it could be, although a couple of them won’t poop in the litterbox if there is poop in there already (because that’s icky), so they’d rather poop out in the box, where everyone can step in it (because that’s less icky?).
Next Thursday at 10 am, we all go to see Miranda at Purrfect Paws for a temperament assessment. Keeping in mind that the old-school temperament tests are really not all that predictive of future behavior, it should at least give us an idea of what they’re like. I have a ton of respect for Miranda’s dog sense, so even just getting her opinions on the puppies will help me and their new owners with trying to make good decisions. And after, they get to meet all kinds of new people while they’re there!
Day 40 – Baby Jail
Wednesday, February 24th, 2010Yes, it is time for baby jail. They are starting to try to climb out and Nina wants to get in and eat poop still, which upsets her stomach (as it upsets the stomach of anyone who watches it), and they are eating four meals a day, so they are ready for weaning (she is barely producing any milk now, but she still lets them nurse, she has the bite marks to prove it).
Day 38
Monday, February 22nd, 2010Day 37
Sunday, February 21st, 2010Individual pictures taken today are up on my website. Not great stacked pictures (except of Wee, who may be called Demi soon), but you can see how they’re growing.
Nails were Dremeled again today, everybody was very good. Thing 2 was a bit worried at first but got over it quickly. Wee/Demi practically slept through it.
Nina was pretty sick again earlier today, but she’s been getting better throughout the afternoon and seems to be just about back to normal now, thank goodness. I was worried about her.
5 Weeks Old (and squirmy!)
Sunday, February 21st, 2010Visitors!
Saturday, February 20th, 2010The puppies had visitors last night and today. They met four new adults and three children and got cuddled and patted and played with, and now they are conked out fast asleep. Since these were the puppies’ soon-to-be new owners visiting, it really brought home to me that they’ll be leaving here pretty soon. That makes me sad. I am happy that they will have such wonderful new homes, but I get a little lump in my throat thinking about them going…I’m sorry, there’s something in my eye…
Nina has been a bit sick (she came to work with me yesterday to get checked out), all her bloodwork was fine, so we think she just has an upset stomach (likely from eating too much puppy poop!). She is definitely feeling more like herself today, which is good.
The Great Escape/Day 34
Thursday, February 18th, 2010So a tailless puppy who shall remain nameless (Immelmann) escaped from the Big House RIGHT IN FRONT OF ME! I have taken measures with cardboard and tape to patch up the location of illicit egress, but any day now we’re going to have to rework things to include an x-pen so as to avoid having puppies wandering around getting into things they shouldn’t. It’s one thing to have them barreling around while supervised, but I can’t puppy proof my whole house and it will give me nightmares to think of what they could get into by themselves (electrical wires…augh!).
Also! There is a new webcam, better picture YAY, shorter cable BOO!
Pictures from today:
Play With Uncle Rakki
Wednesday, February 17th, 2010The puppies had another adventure, walking around in the living room, last night. And not only did Nina try to play with them (play bowing and nose-blatting them), but so did Rakki! In fact, Rakki kept trying to encourage them to get the zoomies with him. So cute.
Last night was their first night sleeping in the big house, in a different room from me (Nina slept with me but went in to check on them and feed them periodically). I realized that it was the first time in nearly 5 weeks that I haven’t slept in the same room as the puppies, also the first time in nearly 5 weeks that I wasn’t woken up every few hours…
They are eating mush (ground puppy food with Esbilac) three times a day now, and Nina seems to be producing less milk, so she may be getting ready to start weaning them. The puppies have seen a lot of the Olympics. I am not sure which country they are rooting for, to be honest, they don’t really seem to have a favorite. Could be Sweden, because they’re Swedish Vallhunds and their dad is from Sweden, could be Canada, since I’m Canadian and their mum is from Canada, could be the US, since they were born here…
