Latest Pet Food Recalls – Blue Buffalo, Karma & Wellness Venison

Howl911 has a very comprehensive list of recalled pet foods to date. It’s getting much scarier now with the rice protein concentrate issue, since (unlike wheat gluten), rice protein concentrate appears in the ingredients lists of some super premium foods like Blue Buffalo Lamb & Rice, two of the Castor & Pollux foods, Karma (which is an organic food made by Innova) and the Wellness Simple Food Solutions venison formula. The Natural Balance venison formula was voluntarily recalled by Natural Balance a few days ago (their venison formula is made by Diamond). I have fed some of these foods, some of the other foods on the list include some Hill’s Prescription Diets (including, ironically, the canine k/d, which is supposed to be for dogs with kidney problems…now it can GIVE them kidney problems). Melamine: it’s not what should be for dinner.

Yesterday at a pet store the cashier immediately told us about an update on a canned cat food from Natural Balance. I noticed the same recall that morning at howl911. It’s a good site for information. Thanks. Oh, and the cashier – she was the first one to talk about the recall, other pet store workers haven’t seemed to be too interested in talking about it, even though some customers wanted to engage them in conversation. Maybe that’s all they hear though, not sure. I’ve been going to different stores at least once a week just to see if they carry the brands I’m interested in. The cat is happy.

Interesting, Roxanne. My sister told me this morning about meeting a woman recently who lost her husband suddenly just before Christmas and lost her three cats to tainted food (I guess in February or March), I can’t imagine how devastating that must have been. It’s horrifying that even the people who you’d think should care the most (you’d think that people who work in pet stores would want to educate as many people as possible) don’t seem to, sometimes. Although the quality and quantity of information has been pretty confusing…but still. Glad your cat is happy!

Oh, how very sad for that woman. And for others too who have lost their furry friends to renal failure. Another customer at the same store yesterday said she’d definitely sue someone if her animals became ill or died. And on the way home we talked about how that seems to be the only thing that makes the pet food companies stand up and take notice of what’s going on in the real world… money. Sigh. (Yes, I know, all companies are like that, otherwise they wouldn’t be in business would they.)
Have you noticed an increase in pet food ads on tv recently? I’m sure I have. And new ones too, not the sameoldsameold.
btw – I really like the new green look of your blog.
